Ligand-Enhanced Zero-Valent Iron for Organic Contaminants Degradation: A Mini Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

For nearly three decades, zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been used in wastewater treatment and groundwater soil remediation. ZVI can degrade contaminants by reactions of adsorption, redox, co-precipitation. It also react with oxidants like hydrogen peroxide, persulfate, ozone to produce highly reactive radicals that rapidly remove even mineralize organic contaminants. However, the application is limited factors such as narrow pH range surface passivation. The addition chelating agents nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA), or citrate ZVI-based processes identified greatly increase stability improve efficiency contaminant degradation. From perspective commonly inorganic applications, review addresses current status ligand-enhanced degradation contaminants, illustrates possible reaction mechanism, provides perspectives for further research.

Tunable synthesis of SiO2-encapsulated zero-valent iron nanoparticles for degradation of organic dyes

A series of nanocomposites consisting of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (ZVI NPs) encapsulated in SiO2 microspheres were successfully synthesized through a successive two-step method, i.e., the wet chemical reduction by borohydride followed by a modified Stöber method. The as-synthesized nanocomposites were characterized using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, vibr...

Degradation of Lindane by Zero-Valent Iron Nanoparticles

Thus far, zero-valent iron has been studied mostly for the degradation of structurally simple oneand two-carbon halogenated organic contaminants such as chlorinated methanes, ethanes, and ethenes. In this research, laboratory synthesized particles of nanoscale iron were explored to degrade lindane, also known as -hexachlorocyclohexane, a formerly widely utilized pesticide and well-documented pe...

H2 Gas Charging of Zero-Valent Iron and TCE Degradation

Granular zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been widely used to construct permeable reactive barriers (PRB) for the in situ remediation of groundwater contaminated with halogenated hydrocarbons. In the anaerobic condition of most groundwater flow systems, iron undergoes corrosion by water and results in hydrogen gas generation. Several studies have shown that some of the hydrogen gas generated at the i...

Ligand-enhanced reactive oxidant generation by nanoparticulate zero-valent iron and oxygen.

The reaction of zero-valent iron or ferrous iron with oxygen produces reactive oxidants capable of oxidizing organic compounds. However, the oxidant yield in the absence of ligands is too low for practical applications. The addition of oxalate, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to oxygen-containing solutions of nanoparticulate zero-valent iron (nZVI) signifi...
